I spend a week in Paris photographing the Christian Dior collection designed by their new creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri. I photographed everything from the atelier to the fittings, backstage, the show, celebrities, black and white images shot in my documentary ‘fly on the wall’ style. DiorTV made a short piece about me.
Show at Punctum Gallery, Chelsea, punk and hip hop photographs, the NYC MashUp and a Punk MashUp. I ask artists friends from that era like Kosmo Vinyl (Clash), Horace Panter (Specials), Pam Hogg (fashion designer), Ian Wright (illustrator) and Christos Tolera (Blue Rondo- see below) to reinterpret my punk photos. We sell a lot of work and I make it on to the BBC evening news.
MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK
The Hip Hop Revolution Exhibition opens in April at the Museum of the City of New York . My photographs of hip hop artists and the MashUp together with Martha Cooper and Joe Conzo’s legendary photos of break dancers, graffiti artists and the early years of the culture. Amazing press and TV coverage from NY1, ABC morning news, the NY Times and more.
A project in Detroit for Shinola, photographing their watch makers, store and office staff with product in the workplace. It is a billboard ad in Los Angeles.
The organizers of Photoville ask me to curate their opening night slide show: ‘Down & Dirty’ my choices of the best music photography from disco to present day, 3 months research, images sourced from more than 100 photographers, a newspaper and exhibition in one of the shipping container galleries. People love the images, everyone from Johnny Cash to Tupac Shakur. The outside of the double stacked container is an 18′ high painted MashUp by legendary artists Cey Adams and Queen Andrea. Seen from the BQE it looks amazing.
Cey Adams conceived and curated the Mashup, combining my portraits of influential DJs and MCs with the work of many of New York’s legendary graffiti artists. He selected the artists, and each artist chose a photo from my archive to reinterpret in their own distinct style.
The Mashup is now a collective of 30 artists including ZEPHYR, LADY PINK, FUTURA, LEE QUINONES, REVOLT and more. In 2018 we published a book with Hat&Beard and Fahey Klein : ‘The MashUp’ is available on Amazon and in good book stores.
